Common core learning standards focus of township-wide event
Teachers from throughout Northfield Township met at Glenbrook South High School on November 14 to learn about the state’s recently adopted common core learning standards and the global impact those standards have on the classroom.
Carol Jago, editor and past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, led the presentation and spoke specifically to the standards for reading and writing. A 32-year educator, Jago was also a member of the feedback committee for the Common Core State Standards initiative.
Some of the items she touched on in her presentation included creating a context for a common core aligned curriculum, developing expectations for the new standards and effective literacy practices.
Teachers who taught English language arts in grades 5th through 10th were present and came from District 225, District 27, District 28, District 30, District 31 and District 34.
