Glenview resident wins first-place award at national college radio competition

Twelve student broadcasters for WONC-FM 89.1, North Central College’s student-run radio station, brought home four first-place awards in national competition from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

The first-place Golden Microphone Trophy Awards were in four categories: Best Newscast, Best Community News, Best Sports Play-by-Play and Best Station Promo.

Sophomore Kevin Jackman of Glenview is one of four co-winners of the Best Sports Play-by-Play award. The broadcast submitted for the award covered the North Central Cardinals men’s football win over Wheaton College on Nov. 5, 2011, and bested submissions from finalists from Northwestern University, Goshen College, Kings College and University of Southern Indiana.

The IBS is one of two national competitions available to college and university radio stations. The second is the Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. (CBI).

WONC is among the most honored collegiate radio stations in America and has won national and state awards in commercial and collegiate competitions. The station has won 20 Marconi College Radio Awards; no other college or university radio station in the country has won more. With a 30-mile listening radius and potential listening audience of four million people, WONC’s pure rock music format broadcasts a mix of news, sports, traffic, music and public affairs programming 24 hours a day, year-round.
