Update: Dold Calls for Passage of 60-Day Extension, Deal Reached

North Shore Congressman urges Republican leadership to modify stance on extension of payroll tax holiday and long term unemployment benefits.

Update (4:30 p.m.): House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) reached an agreement today to extend the payroll tax holiday and long term unemployment benefits for 60 days. There will be a voice vote of House members Friday.

(Earlier 3:30 p.m.): Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) urged House Republican leadership today to pass the 60-day extension of payroll tax holiday and long term unemployment benefits approved Saturday by the Senate.

Rather than vote on the bill Tuesday, Dold voted with most House Republican colleagues to send the bill to a conference committee with the Senate to resolve the differences between the two chambers.

At that time, Dold told Patch he would have supported the 60-day extension if he did not think the conference committee would work. In the wake of a number of Senate Republicans urging the House to follow suit, Dold now wants the 60-day extension.

“For months I have been advocating for the extension of the payroll-tax holiday and have been working in a bipartisan way in Congress to find common ground so we can get things done for the American people,” Dold said. “It is clear that the Senate will not negotiate with the House so I am calling on House Leadership to immediately pass the Senate’s temporary two-month extension.”

Dold is not giving up on the conference committee idea. He wants members appointed quickly to avoid a similar problem at the end of February.

“I am calling on Senators Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell to immediately appoint Senate conferees so that both bodies of Congress can come together and work out a long-term solution,” Dold said.

Dold is one of approximately 40 Republicans who comprise the Tuesday group of moderate Republicans. The group was once chaired by now Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park).

Middle class? Not so much.

Dold is not a moderate Republican. He is more of a tea party Republican and we do not need him representing the 10th congressional district in the no nothing Congress.

Any vote for tax cuts is good, although this whole issue of voting for a 60 day tax cut is ridiculous. Is the Federal government now working on a 2 month fiscal time frame? I seem to remember that one of the reasons people don't trust corporations is that CEO's only think for the short term. Well look how far into the future our bureaucrats are thinking.

With regard to the other posts in this thread... why post that low brow drivel? Why waste time? I'm embarrassed to be part of any community that can't raise their level of discourse above 2nd grade level insults.

Flip for your flop. What "people" are you remembering for? It's very second grade to speak for others without backing up your assertions with factual specifics. There's reasons to distrust CEOs, but lacking anything other than your baseless broadside I think I can only conclude that you have confused short term thinking with long term greed.

It was easy to live with and cross party lines to vote for John Porter as our Congressman. John was heavily involved in our district and always seemed to be a welcome source of dependable resource-oriented assistance for our local governing bodies. Kirk took it up to a 50,000 feet detachment, like he was afraid and distrustful of his constituents (perhaps because he knew he wasn't honest with us all along). Kirk, in case you missed it, was one of less than a dozen GOP senators who voted against the tax cut this week, and dolt automatically licked Kirk's boots and fetched along.

I've given Mr. Dold an opportunity to prove his desire to work for his District by denouncing his allegiance to Grover Norquist. Despite his verbalization that he wants to compromise in Washington, he (as far as I know) continues to refuse to take back his pledge. It is dissapointing to have a representative in Washington with one hand tied behind his back via his commitment to Grover Norquist. The District should come first!

You seem to be awfully bent out of shape about Representative Dold's pledge to not raise taxes. Let's raise the stakes a little bit. I'll call your no-tax-increase pledge and raise you the House of Representatives inaugural pledge.

"I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; ..."

So Representative Dold has sworn to abide by the Constitution, which clearly limits the power of the Federal Government to those things listed in Article 1, Section 8. Using a strict interpretation of the Constitution, about 85% of the federal budget is spent on un-Constitutional programs. Using a tortured-word interpretation of the Constitution leaves us with about 65% of the budget in the un-Constitutional column.

Therefore I conclude that the inaugural pledge trumps the no-tax-increase pledge because any attempt to honor the limits imposed by the Constitution would make honoring the no-tax-increase pledge trivial because the budget would be cut by two-thirds. Also, the inaugural pledge is a legal construct, whereas the no-tax-increase pledge is merely a political tool.

Representative Dold has no legal authority to hand out goodies to our district.

You're move RB.

RB, until 60 Minutes did a segment on Grover Norquist, you most likely didn't know him from Adam. So your blustering about Dold "denouncing his allegiance to Grover Norquist" is just a lot of Democrat hooey.

Karl Rove isn't the boogeyman anymore, so the DNC had to find a new one and, lo and behold, here's Grover Norquist!!

The DNC needs to give you different talking points because these are wearing thin.

Abigail, Norquist has been around since the beginning of time (well, not literally of course), so for you to think one wouldn't know him from Adam is a bit misguided (by the way, I don't watch 60 Minutes, nor any of the television networks you claim are liberal tools). He's been involved in national republican politics since the late 70's and founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985. His most famous quote came in 2001 in which he stated, "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub." Norquist is definitely not someone who no one would have heard of until 60 Minutes did a piece about him. Also, unless your income is in the millions, it is not the intent to raise your taxes. The republicans refuse to ask multi-millionaires or corporations to pay more for their country, but they don't hesitate to play with middle class finances. Despite what you hear from Fox, republicans are perfectly fine with letting you pay more so their real base (look up W's words on that one) doesn't have to.

Karl Rove isn't the boogeyman anymore? When did that happen? Those are not just DNC talking points by the way, more WSJ, NYT, MSNBC, CNN, BBC, ABC, CBS....pretty much every letter set there is, except FOX. Wearing thin? I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty of your talking points as soon as Mr. Rove's Super PAC hits the air waves.

Mr Dold should represent the District with an open mind to solutions that may include revenue increases. An open mind can't exist until he denounces his allegiance to Grover Norquist. It's a reasonable request. He does not have to raise revenue, just be able to consider it. As it stands, he can't vote for tax reform that includes any revenue increases.

If you live in Deerfield, our taxes were increased...library, village, school board all raised our taxes. I can't think of many people who are happy about it...but you are getting a good education for your kids, a rebuilt library and our snow will get plowed this year. Each entity carefully considered their decision. If Mr Dold had been on any of these boards he would have been unable to vote for the increase. Is that really what you want? Despite all the need presented, he would have voted no...to the schools, no to the village, no the library. Personally, I doubt I would have voted for all of the increases, but I'm sure parents, teachers and others would appreciate my being open minded to consider it. Dold can't do that in Congress now, he must vote no. I want more.

Merry Christmas to you too.

Those networks you mentioned--MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS--all are in the back pocket of the DNC and you well know it, as is the NYT. Look at how they treated the anointed one before and since the 2008 election. Good grief, no wonder your view is so biased, you're getting your information from the left-wing news media!!

As for Fox, I doubt you ever watch their news or talk shows, so how would you know what they talk about. And, yes, I do watch the networks you mentioned--how else would I know how biased they are!?

All political debates end at media bias. Only once in 30 years of debate have I been able to convince someone that their point of view was tainted by media bias. Those are really bad odds.

Once we reach this point, we should all just go home and wait for the next topic.

Charlie

Abby. You really think that "all are in the back pocket of the DNC, and you well know it".. is an articulate statement replete with examples which led you to draw that conclusion? I suggest that as you mature, you may want to learn to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, and learn to read what you write and interpret that objectively as if you were an articulate critic of yourself. A little less "chicken little" on your part will reverse the image you portray as if you were the south end of a mule headed north.

So I'll go ahead and break my own rule...

The leftward media bias has been well documented in a book called "Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind" by Tim Groseclose. The total effect of media bias is estimated to be about 10%, meaning that with a truly balanced media we should expect our country to shift 10 "PQ" points to the right. It pays to advertise!

Abigail,
You are going to find that book to be fascinating reading, but don't expect to convince anyone on the left there's any truth to it. You need to read it because you are in and ideological battle and you need to know what you're really up against.

Charlie,
Don't bother buying the book. It will be a waste of your time and money.

"Let's take back our country", and "Let's take back our state"! Unfortunately tea party supporters and other extreme wingers (on both sides) don't understand that the primary political objective is to start your "revolution" by taking back control of the bloated taxing bodies that abuse us in our own back yards. I view the Nordquist pledge as a white herring symbol of backyard hypocrisy. dolt has all but abandoned local governing bodies in the district.

My observation is people have a liking to one source of news, a specific TV network or print news source. I also notice, over the years talking with friends, family, neighbors, the ones that like and watch/read on a very regular basis the more conservative higher readership and viewership outlets (Fox, WSJ, Talk radio) tend to also watch and read sources that are of more liberal stance (MSNBC, NYT, NPR) on a semi-regilar basis. Individuals that like watch/read on a very regular basis the more liberal outlets tend to totally ignore the more conservative outlets. When I ask someone that loves MSNBC the last time they listened to Rush Limbaugh or watched Fox News they respond with never. And usually a bigot or racist card is played as well followed by complete surprise of where I get my news. I like to be well rounded, so each time I watch Fox, CNN, MSNBC, read the NYT,the WSJ, or the Economists, MY conservative/libertarian principals just get stronger. Watch and read it all and then you can be yourself - not a conservative talking point or a liberal talking point but an intelligent productive American. God Bless, and Merry Christmas to y'all!

Exactly!! I grew up in a Democrat household--in my family it was God, family and the Democrat party in that order. It was pounded into me from an early age to be a Democrat, but Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat I voted for. I was so disenchanted with him that I started listening to both sides and agreed more with what I heard from the Republicans than the propaganda I heard from the Democrats.

I have several liberal friends who talk about how biased Rush, Bill and Sean are. BUT, then when I ask if they listen to Rush, Bill or Sean, they say "No!" How can they say Rush, Bill and Sean are biased if they have never listened to them?

We regularly watch various CNN, MSNBC, etc. programs and, yes, my conservative views do get stronger when I hear the BS--sometimes I stare at the TV is disbelief, but I do listen. Chris Matthews' NBC show is usually so far to the left, I find it very amusing and I do sometimes with Howard Kurtz's show "Reliable Sources." I rarely agree with anything they say, but I want to know what the other half thinks.

I don't understand how anyone with one iota of intelligence could go through life only listening to one side of the story, but some liberals do it all of the time.

Charlie

Abby, you seem to face a challenge when it comes to what you think other people are thinking. I feel compassion towards people who describe their family upbringing as you have. There are so many more important things in life after God and family. If political persuasion was really number 3 priority in your family, then its small wonder you would encounter difficulties with...education for example...tolerance of others' points-of-view...and service to community and country.

I hope you aren't insinuating that I am uneducated, or that education was not a priority in my family because that definitely was not the case. Maybe I did not explain myself--despite being Democrats, my family was very conservative and family oriented, but there was an allegiance to the Democrat party that I had difficulty with after being out in the real world on my own. Completing our education and being successful was expected of each of my siblings and I, but for the family as a whole--it was God, family and the Democrat party. Conversations around the dinner table included school, our activities, family, and whatever was the latest political fallout from those "damn Republicans." I am one of those "damn Republicans" now and never been happier with that choice.

As for service to community and country, does my mother's work with Catholic Charities or my brother's 24 year commitment to the military count?

Doesn't matter when these things were said. A pattern s a pattern-
Rush-
“Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”
“Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”
“The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.”
“They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?”
(Definitely a classic)
[To an African American female caller]: “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.”

And then you've got Hannity's penchant for selective editing-
