A 17-year-old Glenbrook North High School senior died after his car collided with an SUV Monday afternoon. 

Kyle Caraher was driving to his friend's house in Wisconsin where his family was vacationing at about 1 p.m. when the crash occurred, the Columbia County Sheriff's Department stated in a press release. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wisconsin police say Caraher's car was traveling north on a country road and failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle was hit by an SUV travelling east at the intersection. 

The SUV driver suffered minor injuries. The sheriff's department said speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

“We are devastated beyond words," Glenbrook North Principal Paul Pryma said. "Kyle was a strong, collaborative and hardworking contributor to our community. He was loved by all.” 

Caraher played football and lacrosse for the school. He was dedicated to physical development and training in the off-season, his football coach Matt Purdy said.

“Kyle is the kind of young man I hope my young son will become some day,” GBN's head football coach Bob Pieper said in a statement released by the school.

Caraher was also on academic honor roll. 

“Kyle had a presence that was larger than life," teacher Peg Holocek said. 

According to a press release sent out by District 225 Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle, Caraher has a younger brother who is a sophomore at GBN.

Counselors and social workers will be available through the remainder of the week at both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South.
