Glenview Couple Charged With Child Endangerment, Dog Hoarding
Scott and Jennifer Corneliuson were charged with child endangerment and animal hoarding on Thursday morning. Their three children are now in the care of a family member, according to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
Scott Corneliuson, 40, and Jennifer Corneliuson, 43, were arrested Thursday and charged with endangering the life of a child and companion animal hoarding, according to the Glenview Police Department.
The Corneliuson family lives in the 3300 block of Lakewood Ct., where police said they found 35 dogs living in their own waste during an investigation Dec. 7.
The Corneliuson family had three children, according to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. The kids are now in the care of a family member and the dogs are being removed per a DCFS safety plan.
A neighbor who asked Patch to withhold her identity said the Corneliuson children were between the ages of 5 and 8.

The dogs must be removed from the home before the kids are allowed back, according to Dave Clarkin, a DCFS spokesperson, though he could not say whether the family might be allowed to keep some dogs. Residents can have up to five dogs, according to Glenview police.
As of this morning, dogs could still be heard at the address from outside the house, accompanied by the smell of animal waste.
The family appeared before a judge this morning, and they're now being held in custody on a $25,000 bond, according to police. Their court dates were set for Jan. 14.
Arrangements are still being made to relocate the discovered dogs, according to a DCFS press release, but animals rescued by Glenview authorities are typically available for adoption through the Animal Welfare League at (708) 636-8586 or www.animalwelfareleague.com.

Unless you live in Alaska and are a dog sled enthusiast I really don't see the need for 35 dogs.

The dogs were living in their own waste and the children will be returned to the parents???

Seems that the parents love dogs in some strange way more than their own kids. This is quite hard for one to understand.

What I've heard is that she is running a rescue and going out of state to pick up dogs. It's a shame that both children and dogs were living in filth. Perhaps she shouldn't get her kids and dogs back.

Although I read this Patch column almost every day, I find many of your articles intrusive and offensive. I can just see some reporter pouring through the police reports trying to find a story they can put their name to...or police officers trying to get some press for their arrests. The story says the police report was dated Dec 7 and yet they weren't arrested until Thursday (what Thursday - story doesn't say whether the parents were immediately arrested or police waitied until today that is the Thursday seven days laterl). How long did the chldren remain at the home after the report was filed? DCFS isn't going to try to permanently remove the children (they can come back after the dogs have been removed), so obviously there are no other charges against the parents...except having too many dogs that created a smelly environment. I am a dog lover, but no way I would ever have 35 dogs...or even three of that matter. Maybe they just couldn't face having these dogs put down if they couldn't find homes for them. The children probably loved the dogs too. The story doesn't say that anyone was ever bitten by the dogs or that they were dangerous or mean. What are the children going to be subjected to when everyone in their local area and school know that their parents were arrested and they were removed from their home. Have some charity and kindness Glenview and try helping out your neighbors in need.

Having that many dogs does not create a "smelly" environment. It creates a FILTHY environment. These people don't live on a farm where the dogs can run free.
There is NO WAY you can properly take care of 35 dogs and your three kids...

I agree, especially over the holidays, 25,000 bail and no hearing until the 14th of January. These 3 kids from "5-8 years old" are going to have one sad Holiday season. Take the dogs away, remove the kids from the home, but to jail them on $25,000 bond... there is either more to the story or this "story" has gotten out of hand...

This is vile on every level. Liz, you seem to be making an excuse for these parents which makes me question your intelligence. One simply cannot justify these actions unless you lack the basics of knowing right from wrong. While the article only reported on the facts, one cant help but imagine how long this been going on. Where are their family or friends? Do they not have any? What about their neighbors? I'm sure they are thrilled to be living on the same block as these white trash hillbillies and paying property taxes through their noses. Do these people even work? Absolutely disgusting.....

I am sure the children have lived with these conditions for a LONG time and do love the dogs. What about parents being responsible, looking out for the best interest and HEALTH of their kids who were brought into this family. Re: what are the kids going to be subjected to from others? Do you think they have ever been able to bring friends over not to mention the secrets kept. There are many anti-kill shelters for dogs. These parents need help and hopefully will get it and the kids.. they probably thought their lifestyle was normal hopefully they can begin to see another side.

I hope everyone in town gets behind these kind people and show them our support. Glenview is a wonderful town full of wonderful open minded progressive people. So many of us selfishly put our lives above those of our helpless pets. Maybe if we all took in 3 dogs these people wouldn't have been forced to take in 35. It's not easy to have a big heart. Where would this country have been without people like Abraham Lincoln?

I appreciate what you're saying, but you're putting your emotions before reason. Without knowing these people, I can absolutely imagine that they mean well. But by putting good intentions first, and not fully considering the consequences/results, such beliefs can be extremely destructive, as evidenced by the conditions the dogs and children - whose needs should be placed at a much higher level than the dogs! - were living in.
I'm not saying "don't care for needy animals," or "it's wrong to have a big heart." I'm an animal lover myself and people should do what they can to help those in need. Good intentions, however, can not trump results of one's behavior. Lincoln certainly considered such things and thankfully was not lead merely by his "heart."

What! Abraham Lincoln! What in thew world does Abraham Lincoln have to do with this situation? These kind people live like the animals they have hoarded.. How can you care for thirty five animals and your children? You can't! If being progressive means to be an idiot, count me out.

Have you studied Abraham Lincoln? If you had, you would understand. Have you ever been to the Lincoln Museum in Springfield? If you had, you would understand. Do you have any idea how many people he sacrificed for a simple cause? If you had, you would understand. My parents raised 12 of us along with dogs, cats, 20 cows, 40 chickens, ... Its quite sad to see parents today so inept that they actually struggle raising just 2 or 3 three children.

For all of you who think you know the whole story, you have no clue. Were they wrong for having that many dogs in their home, YES. However, The mom runs a dog rescue and her partner in the rescue was slacking off big time and put Jen in a horrible situation. She does love the dogs, but she loves her kids more. I have known her my entire life. Jen was desperately trying to get these dogs adopted or into foster homes. She never intended or wanted that many dogs in her home. I'm not defending that the number of dogs was outrageous, however, I knew what she was going through and tried to help her find homes for the dogs too. As far as working, yes, the dad, Scott, works, and Jen is a retired firefighter who has a bad knee injury. I bet if you knew she saved lives and yes they were human lives, you might have a different opinion. Once she could no longer be a firefighter, I believe that the dogs somehow filled a void of saving lives. I have been around her kids many times, and they are all VERY HAPPY and clean. They LOVE the dogs. If I didn't know the family personally, I may have a completely different opinion, however, that is not the case. Try to be a little more understanding before you jump to conclusions.

"Lieutenant Dan
"If you were her friend then perhaps you should have guided her a lot better where all this could have been avoided. Since all the neighbors are now aware of the circumstances, we not only going to be will be working with the authorities in monitoring the on-going situation very closely but pursuing legal recourse."
First of all, she had that many dogs for about a week. Secondly, if I had a bigger place, I would have fostered some of them like I had in the past. 3rd of all, if it was so AWFUL, why didn't the neighbors know about all the dogs BEFORE the article and cops were around the house? 4th, you mention that you are "pursuing legal recourse." However, for what are you in pursuit? You make no sense and do NOT know all of the facts. All the dogs have since been placed in homes or foster homes and their lives were saved. The house has been cleaned incredibly well, the kids are back home and couldn't be happier. Once again, I never said they were right for having that many dogs, but it was a good cause that snowballed out of control for a very SHORT period of time, and everything is back to normal. If the worst crime they committed was animal hoarding, I want them as my neighbors! At least they care about a life not to mention a bunch of lives. We have all at one point in our life made bad decisions, and I know you have too Lieutenant Dan. Please stop harassing my friend and her family with your threats on here.
