The cause remains unknown for a fire that occurred at 1699 Independence Ave., but no serious injuries were reported.

On the Thursday, Dec. 13 at about 7:00 p.m., the Glenview Fire Department received a call from the resident of 1699 Independence Ave. reporting a fire in his basement, according to a recent fire department press release.

The first units to arrive on the scene were met with heavy fire and extreme heat in a basement, the release says. Five occupants had evacuated the building prior to the fire department’s arrival — they were warned of the flame by functioning smoke detectors, according to the fire department.

Multiple hose lines were stretched to contain and extinguish the fire, but heavy damage was sustained in the basement and first floor, along with moderate smoke damage to the second floor, according to the press release.

The fire caused about $250,000 worth of damage but the cause for the flame is currently unknown, according to the fire department. One firefighter with minor injuries was treated and released from Glenbrook Hospital, according to the release.
