Glenview's Smoliga Heads to Omaha for Olympic Trials
Next stop: London? Help celebrate with the three-time state swimming champ and 2012 Olympic hopeful at a community send-off June 16.
When Patch talked with Olivia Smoliga about the possibility of being an Olympic contender after record-shattering performances at the November 2010 IHSA state finals, she called the possibility 'a dream.'
"I'll have to train hard, really hard," Smoliga said nearly two years ago of making her way to Olympic trials in Nebraska.
And train hard she has.

Now, the Glenbrook South High School senior is getting ready to head to Omaha. Before she packs her bags though, Smoliga will rally with supporters, friends, family and long-time coaches Steve Iida and Kelly Timson in Glenview.
The Village has planned a spirited send-off for Smoliga, who has qualified for the trials that determine who makes the U.S. team for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Smoliga has been swimming for the Glenview Titan Aquatic Club since she was 10 years old. She currently holds three state high school records and has won three state championships.
Come cheer on Olivia and join the celebration from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Gallery Park amphitheater (behind Attea Middle School, 2500 Chestnut Ave).
The event will also feature GBS band Mungo and Village President Kerry Cummings will be on hand to wish Smoliga luck.
