Great Escape: Join The Club!

The Glenview Public Library offers a variety of book clubs.

We’ve all driven by the , and most of us have gone there with our kids, or to get books for ourselves. But did you know that the library has a book club? Five book clubs, actually, and what a great escape it could be to pop into one for an hour!

“People like to read what other people are reading-- they want a fresh view,” said Karen Barron, one of the club moderators and a 23-year library employee. “And it makes them read things they wouldn’t choose to read themselves.”

Page Turners, a diverse book club meets the first Monday of every month from 1:00-2:00 p.m., and Readers Circle, the club that reads classic and contemporary literature gets together the second Monday of the month from 7:30-8:30 p.m. The other book clubs focus on non-fiction, travel and mystery.

Titles are selected annually by group ballot, and the books are available for readers to pick up one month prior to the meeting.

“The people are very well read and educated and you can tell they read a wide range of books,” said Barbara Isaacson about her Page Turners co-members. “And it makes it interesting because they pull their life experiences into the discussion.”

And in case you needed more convincing, you get to spend time in the absolutely beautiful, serene, peaceful and quiet library that your tax dollars paid for. Plus, it’s free!

“You get the benefit of a much broader viewpoint," said Isaacson when asked about  the advantage of reading with a book club versus reading alone. "It’s an enriching experience. Because of the diversity of the people, you get a bigger picture.”
