The event was first organized 12 years ago to memorialize Lew Blond, beloved Maple School teacher who passed away from ALS, known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, in 2000.
Since its inception, the event has raised more than $90,000 to support research at the Les Turner ALS Foundation. A portion also is directed to the Stu Rosen Transportation Fund, which was established to assist patients afflicted with ALS to get to and from their medical appointments.
Funding also provided scholarships for graduating seniors at Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high schools, who were Eleni Artemas and Marc Ja'come, respectively. Proceeds aso are used for special projects at Maple, Wescott and Willowbrook Schools in Northbrook/Glenview School District 30.
Lew Blond's daughter Julianne, his mother Marietta Blond, sister Barbara Blond all attended this year's race, as they have done since its inception.
