GBS Horticulture earns 1st in state
Glenbrook South’s Horticulture Team finished 1st in state during the state horticulture contest April 27th at the University of Illinois. This is the 21st time in 27 years that GBS has secured this title. The following students competed:

- Lauren Gabuzzi (2nd individual in state)
- Elim Jeong (4th individual in state)
- Joanna Kim (5th individual in state)
- Sam Bielanski (6th individual in state)
- Amanda Duncan (alternate)
- Joe Hampton (alternate)
- Brandon Katz (alternate)
- Jack Meyers (alternate)
Student honored for superior writing
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) recently awarded Glenbrook South’s Casey Chiappetta a certificate for superior writing. She joins only 274 high school juniors from throughout the nation who were awarded this honor. These recipients were selected from a pool of more than 1,000 students who were nominated their junior years by their teachers.
Illinois Journalism Education Association honors Oracle with several awards
The Illinois Journalism Education Association announced their Newspaper Contest Awards for 2011-2012, which recognized student-journalists for their published work from the year. Members of The Oracle were honored in the following categories:
- Emy Theodorakis, 2nd Place, Features Story
- Ben Kraus, 4th Place, Sports Story
- Thomas Pollick, 3rd, Place, Column Writing
- Evin Billington, 4th Place, Review Writing
- Dan Chmielinski, 2nd Place, Photography; 1st Place, Ad Design
- Atticus Ludwig, 2nd Place, Graphics
Additionally, The Oracle as a whole won 4th place in the state in Overall Design and tied for 2nd for Best Overall Newspaper in the state of Illinois.
GBS Math Team ranked 13th in state
The Glenbrook South Math Team finished 13th at the ICTM Math Team State Competition on May 5. As a team, GBS won the Richard Rhoad Most Improved School Award for improving 10 spots over last year’s finish. The Freshmen Algebra 1 Team also placed 8th and the Sophomore Geometry Team placed 10th. Individually, freshman Erik Tomasic finished 4th and freshmen Brian Park finished 9th.
Glenbrook South Titans move on to collegiate football
John Dezil, Max Leonard, Mac Zabriskie, Mike Demos and Gus Shipp will all move on to play college football next fall.
Dezil will attend Carthage College next fall where he will play football and study Business. Dezil was a key contributor for the Titans on the offensive line this past fall and he also participates in track and field.
Leonard will attend Illinois Wesleyan University this fall where he will play football and study Physics and Economics. Leonard was a two-year starter for the Titans and was Academic All-State and All-Conference as a senior. He also participates in track and field at Glenbrook South.
Zabriskie will attend Illinois Wesleyan University this fall where he will play football and study Business. He was the starting quarterback for the Titans this past fall and heal so did the kicking for Glenbrook South. Zabriskie is also a baseball player at Glenbrook South.
Demos will attend Butler University this fall where he will play football and engage in Exploratory Studies. Demos was a three-year starter for the Titans on the offensive and defensive lines, and as a senior he wasAll-State and All-Conference. He was also one of the captains of the team and he played hockey throughout his high school years.
Shipp will attend Carthage College this fall where he will play football and study Art and Education. Gus was a two-year starter for the Titans on the defensive line and he was one of the leading tacklers this past fall. Shipp also competes in track and field at Glenbrook South.
GBS swimmer signs with Loyola Marymount
Glenbrook South senior Hallie Hengels recently signed a National Letter of Intent to swim next year on scholarship at Loyola Marymount University in California.
Hengels was a four year varsity swimmer at GBS and team captain her senior year. She was also named All Conference, All State, and All American during her time at GBS.
Hengels holds school records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay. This past season, she placed 9th in the 100 breaststroke, 3rd in the 200 medley relay, and 9th in the 400 freestyle relay at the IHSA State Meet.
