Peter Pujals, junior, football wide receiver, Loyola Academy and this week’s winner – Pujals had the best game of his career, catching nine passes for 181 yards in Loyola’s 29-0 win over Dunbar in the second round of the playoffs. The junior wide receiver had all nine of his catches in the first half, including a 51-yard touchdown from QB Malcolm Weaver. Loyola advanced to play Lyons in the Class 8A quarterfinals.

The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win.

Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend. Later completed the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds. The Trevians took 11th as a team.

Olivia Nelson, senior, volleyball middle hitter, Glenbrook South – Nelson led the Titans with six kills and three blocks in Glenbrook South’s 25-19, 25-12 victory over Loyola Academy to win the Class 4A Glenbrook South Sectional championship. After finishing the regular season with a sub-.500 record, the Titans rallied and advanced all the way to the Super-Sectional before falling to St. Charles East.

Matt Alviti, junior, football quarterback, Maine South – Maine South fell to Stevenson in the second round of the playoffs, but Alviti still had his typically good day. The junior quarterback threw several touchdowns and ran for another in the 24-22 loss. Saturday’s loss ended Maine South’s quest to win four straight state championships and stopped the Hawks’ 22-game winning streak.
