Wagner Farms is a tax-payer purchased and supported facility. As an ethical vegan, I would be outraged that my tax dollars were going toward the glorification of the brutal slaughter of young pigs. Furthermore, don't you know, bacon is probably one of the unhealthiest "foods" on the planet, loaded with artery-clogging fats and cholesterol. Shame on you, Wagner Farms.

No the question is, why is our local government even in the business of running a farm! I'm sure some will tell me it's really a park, but no, it's a farm. I'm sure it's also not self supporting, at least not without the help of creative accounting from our municipal bookkeepers.

I think in the best in education, we are exposed to animal justice ideals ... the ones ethical strict vegetarians (or vegans) like Tolstoy wrote of 120 years ago and Pythagoras much earlier... let's revisit these ideals of compassion and kindness and respect for all life... I would encourage screening of film Peaceable Kingdom (about animal farmers switching to animal rights advocates who set up farm sanctuaries) and Forks over Knives (the best ever film on health and whole grain, plant based diet) Also schools should have as essential reading books by Tom Regan (The Case for Animal Rights; Empty Cages) and others... it's about education and enlightenment at the end of the day

Yes Anita, I would think that a park district farm should be in the business of compassion for animals, not slaughter.

As a board member of the Wagner Farm Rescue Fund, I want to clarify that Wagner Farm Rescue Fund is a non-profit organization that was founded back in 2002 to address the animal welfare issues at Wagner Farm. One of our ongoing intentions since Day One has been to foster a collaborative relationship with both the Glenview Park District and Wagner Farm. We strive to create an understanding of not only the importance but also the necessity of humane programming at Wagner Farm. Clearly, the upcoming NorthShore Baconfest event does not represent a humane program nor any reciprocity on the part of Wagner Farm towards collaborative efforts with Wagner farm Rescue Fund. Wagner Farm Rescue Fund strongly objects to yet another use by the Glenview Park District of tax payer purchased and supported property for inhumane Wagner Farm programming and commercial propaganda at the expense of the lives of animals. This illustrates yet another disheartening example of their lack of compassion and respect for the welfare of animal lives they do not personally value except for purposes of exploitation.

From what I understand the Northshore Baconfest at Wagner Farm is a fund raiser for the community. Proceeds will support the double value food stamp program and provide scholarships to schools who can't afford field trips. What has the Wagner Farm Rescue Fund (which as nothing to do with Wagner Farm or Glenview)done to HELP the community of Glenview????

Glenview can and should think of more creative ways other than promoting an unhealthy food and animal cruelty to fund their programs.

I also heard that the vegan group that continues to harass Wagner Farm is now bullying and blackmailing Sweet Dream Organic Bakery in Glenview. If Sweet Dreams participates in the Wagner Farm Baconfest fund raiser the vegans will no longer bring business to Sweet Dreams. Is bulling & harassment helping the Glenview community?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Promoting unhealthful eating and cruelty to animals is no longer the societal norm. Get used to it.

Peter Wagner raised pigs at the old farm. Darn I should have got some tickets. Maybe a VeganFest is next ?

Simple fact. A Bacon fest will raise many times more dollars than a vegan fest. It is a fundraiser, the point is to make money. The majority of people LOVE bacon. This event will be a big success, and I'm sure will become annual. Get over it.
