About this column:

Once a month, Glenview Patch introduces you to the man or woman behind some of your favorite food around town.
For Martha Sutton, cooking and baking have always been a family affair.  Her dad owned his own catering company as a side business and passed his love of cooking and eating good food to his four children. Not surprisingly, all four are currently involved in the food industry. Though never formally trained, Sutton learned how to cook from her dad and baking lessons from her grandmother, mom and aunt were a regular occurance. Sutton spent time learning pastries in Paris, and worked under renowned local chefs like Michael Altenberg at Campagnola in Evanston and Gale Grand at Tru. Now the …
Since 1981, Walker Bros. Original Pancake House has been serving Glenview residents hearty breakfasts in a classy but comfortable atmosphere at 1615 Waukegan Rd. As General Manager, Beth Perez says she fell in love with the classic decor of the local breakfast spot whe she first started at the restaurant as a waitress.  A native of nearby Winnetka, Perez quickly became an assistant night manager, then moved to the Wilmette location (the nation's busiest Walker Bros.) and in 2006, she  jumped at the opportunity to return to her roots in Glenview. Needless to say, the Glenview location became …
About five years ago, Fred Markoff was adrift, literally, then figuratively. He had just finished up work as a provisions master on a cruise ship, and was looking for an exciting new challenge. Tired of finishing runner-up for general manager positions at restaurants, Markoff consulted a few friends, including one who had just opened his own place in Tennessee. A few more similar endorsements convinced Markoff to take the plunge and he was inspired to create a "gourmet hot dog and sausage sandwich …
A lot has changed at 609 Milwaukee Ave. since brothers Augie and Bobby Arifi bought the place nearly sixteen years ago with their father, Sam. Formally Pasta Facce, the brothers have remodeled the restaurant twice, adding a 60-seat private dining room and an outdoor patio that opened last year. Perhaps most impressive, the Arifis turned a wine list of only 12 selections (six red, six white), into nearly 900 wine offerings from locales including Italy, California, France and South America. Bobby's expertise in selecting the wine list has earned Cafe Lucci a Wine Spectator award for nine …
It was 1939 when Jim and Kitz Masterson bought a white house for $1 from their aunt Bebe Hackney, who operated a back porch snack stand. They then opened Hackney's restaurant in her honor at the site in Glenview and used a hackney coach as their logo. Since then, the original restaurant, along Harms Road near Blue Star Memorial forest preserve, has been delighting customers with its famous burgers, Reubens and onion loafs, which were named among the top three in the country by Restaurant Management magazine in 2006.  Thriving business has enabled the family-owned and -operated restaurant to …
