DESCRIPTION:This is Part two of a six part lecture series by Dr. Stuart R
 icher.\nThis course reviews the biochemistry and patho-physiology of cat
 aract formation and the protective effects of fruits and vegetables\, as
 corbic acid\, lutein and multivitamins.&nbsp\; Dr. Richer describes his 
 April 2004 meeting in Moscow with Mark Babizhayev\, PhD of the Helmholtz
  Institute concerning the patented &ldquo\;Russian Cataract Drop&rdquo\;
 \, 1% n-acetylcarnosine\, shown to reverse age related cataract (Drugs R
 &amp\;D 2002 and 2005). Some 50\,000 bottles have been sold worldwide. D
 r Richer has recently co-authored 2 papers on these eye drops.\nABOUT OU
 R SPEAKER\nStuart Richer\, OD\, PhD\, FAAO is Director of the Ocular Pre
 ventive Medicine Laboratory at the Captain James A Lovell Federal Health
  Care Center Eye Clinic for veterans and navy patients. He earned an OD\
 , MS (physiologic optics) simultaneously from UC Berkeley in 1981\, a VA
  residency certificate in 1982\, and a PhD in human physiology and bioph
 ysics in 1996 from Chicago Medical School. He&rsquo\;s an associate prof
 essor of Family and Preventative Medicine at Chicago Medical School\, as
 sistant professor at the University of Illinois Department of Ophthalmol
 ogy / Eye and Ear Infirmary and holds 2 additional faculty appointments 
 in clinical optometry at ICO and UMSL. Actively involved in primary care
  optometry for 30 years and prevention for 20 years\, Dr. Richer has spe
 cial interests in aging\, prescribing nutrients in the intervention of a
 ge related macular degeneration\, low-tension glaucoma\, cataracts and d
 ry eye.
