DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; In four stellar sessions\, Septe
mber 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, Fred Shafer will discuss "Memory in Fiction" in
the Off Campus Writers' Workshop. Fred will focus on the value of replac
 ing the term &ldquo\;back story&rdquo\; with &ldquo\;memory&rdquo\;.&nbs
p\; The opening speaker at OCWW for many years\, Fred is an experienced
literary editor\, writer\, and teacher of writing in the Northwestern Sc
hool of Continuing Studies and private workshops. One of the greatest ch
allenges faced by writers is finding ways to represent things that happe
ned in the past\, or the back story. Fred will suggest that a basic know
ledge of how people remember their lives can enable writers to solve pro
blems about the length\, placement\, and relevance of past experience\,
and improve the quality of the writing.&nbsp\; He&rsquo\;ll use examples
taken from adult literary fiction\, as well as books for children\, int
 ermediate readers\, and young adults.&nbsp\; &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\
;&nbsp\; Fred&rsquo\;s workshops are always the strong motivational and
supportive kick-off for our OCWW writers&rsquo\; audience.&nbsp\; All se
ssions are open to the public. $15 per session. OCWW members ($30 per ye
 ar) receive session discounts and may have manuscripts critiqued.&nbsp\;
Please visit http://www.ocww.bizland.com for manuscript guidelines for
members. Critiques from members will be accepted until the third session
 .
