North Suburban YMCA to Honor UPS at Eighth Annual Strong Kids Dinner

The North Suburban YMCA will host its Eighth Annual Ken and Alta Thiel Strong Kids Fundraising Dinner on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Hilton Chicago--Northbrook. The Y will honor UPS with the Thiel Award for Leadership and Social Responsibility in recognition of its longstanding support of the Y’s mission and programs, and its strong support of the community at large.

UPS has been a staunch supporter of Y initiatives for several years, providing generous grants that have funded the Y’s new Youth and Family Wellness Center, renovations to make the Y fully accessible to individuals with disabilities, Healthy Kids Day, and other Y programs serving the Y's diverse population. UPS joins a distinguished list of past award recipients, including Ken and Alta Thiel, Allstate Insurance, Ron Bernardi, Northbrook Rotary, the Northbrook Woman’s Club, First Bank of Highland Park, and Wintrust CEO Edward Wehmer.

“Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. We encourage our people in every part of the world to assess community needs, recommend grants, and engage with local charities,” said UPS Community Relations Manager La Rue Martin. “We are grateful for this award and for the opportunity to make a difference through worthy organizations like the North Suburban YMCA.”

Through the support raised by the Strong Kids Fund, the Y gives families access to childcare, summer camp, membership, special needs, wellness, and all other programs offered by the Y. Currently, one out of five individuals using the Y receives some level of need-based financial assistance.

“The Y is open to everyone in the community, including those who may need financial assistance,” notes NSYMCA Executive Director/CEO Howard Schultz. “The Strong Kids Fund is a lifeline to people who are going through economic difficulties.” Over the last seven years, the Ken & Alta Thiel Strong Kids Dinner has raised more than $1.5 Million, helping over 10,000 individuals in need to participate in Y programs and services.
