“We are excited about working with Peapod because it already plays an important role in our program,” says Terra Ayres, Weight Watchers spokesperson and Peapod customer.  “Weight Watchers teaches that a healthy body starts with a healthy lifestyle. Skipping processed foods for Power Foods – fresh choices like fruits, veggies, and lean protein – will keep your calorie count down, improve your mood, and increase productivity.  Shopping at Peapod.com puts those choices right at your fingertips and delivers your order right to your door both at work and home, making it easier to avoid high-calorie impulse buys and stick to your weight loss plan.”

Weight Watchers supports more than 300 At Work programs throughout Chicagoland.  These small group meetings among colleagues while at work are mentored by Weight Watchers leaders who will now be equipped with information on how to manage weekly meal and snack plans through Peapod.com.  “Because Peapod delivers to office and work locations, you can make sure you have good, brain-boosting, metabolism-boosting food choices on the job,” said Ayres.

A Healthy Return on Investment

Not only are weight management goals a personal choice, but many employers have increasingly been offering employee wellness programs to help promote long-term health among workers.  According to 2012 studies from researchers at Brigham Young University, the Health Enhancement Research Organization and the Center for Health Research at Healthways, employees with an unhealthy diet are 66 percent more likely to report a loss in productivity than their counterparts who regularly made healthy food choices. Wellness programs are widely thought to increase morale, decrease healthcare costs, and boost productivity.

Tribune Direct, a Chicago-based marketing solutions company, spearheaded an employee wellness effort nearly a year ago, regularly ordering fresh, healthy food from Peapod for meetings and employee snacking.  “Unlike the vending machine options, the foods we order from Peapod – seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, nonfat yogurts – don’t make you crash,” says employee Greg Marvin of Tribune Direct.  “And Peapod’s online ordering and delivery make healthy workday eating easy and convenient.”

Sort and Shop Smart

Peapod.com’s built-in sorting tool called NutriFilter helps shoppers make choices according to Weight Watchers’ Points Plus program and other nutritional needs.  By simply clicking on the Weight Watchers option in NutriFilter, Weight Watchers points are displayed item by item to help inform customers’ decisions as they shop online or with the Peapod mobile app.  NutriFilter can also sort according to dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, good fiber, low sodium and low fat.

“In a time when schedules are more demanding than ever, convenience is a common driver of food choices.  Peapod has evolved beyond an online grocery shopping service to become a healthy lifestyle solution that extends from the home front to the workplace,” says Tony Stallone, Peapod’s VP of Fresh Markets.  “With our delivery service and Pick-up locations, we meet shoppers where they are – anytime, anywhere – and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Weight Watchers to bring our convenience, value and wide range of high-quality, nutritious foods to our customers at work.”

Peapod features more than 12,000 popular and house-brand products, including a wide variety of fresh produce, organic items and healthy prepared foods.  Stallone added that Peapod’s seasonal produce boxes are popular office choices as they include a rotating selection of the season’s best fruits and vegetables.

Power Food Pointers from Weight Watchers

“You often hear in our Weight Watchers meetings, ‘a goal without a plan is just a wish,’” says Ayres.  “A key component of successful weight loss and maintenance is shopping for Power Foods and having them on hand.  Peapod makes it easy and convenient to bring healthy food choices into your life.”

To help you get started, here are five Power Foods from Terra that are always in her shopping cart:

  1. Peapod Greek yogurt – plain
  2. Peapod SteamReady frozen vegetables – broccoli & cauliflower, mixed vegetables, or green peas
  3. Peapod SteamReady fresh potatoes – fingerling, red, sweet, or white
  4. Bananas – green or ripe
  5. Peapod boneless, skinless chicken breasts
