The Michael Matters Foundation Establishes $25,000 Grant for Patients at NorthShore University HealthSystem Kellogg Cancer Center

On Friday, October 18, 2013, the Michael Matters Foundation presented NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Kellogg Cancer Center with a check for $25,000. This generous donation will enable the creation of The Michael Matters Grant. The Michael Matters Grant will help patients battling brain tumors maintain their quality of life during their treatment by providing financial assistance for non-medical related expenses.

“There are numerous expenses that are often times overlooked during treatment,” said TJ Saye, founder of the Michael Matters Foundation. “Many patients lose their jobs while undergoing treatment and are burdened by both medical and non-medical related expenses, including transportation, hotel, and childcare. We’d like to provide some level of relief for those suffering – one less worry during an incredibly difficult time.”

The Michael Matters Foundation was established in 2013 to honor Michael P. Schostok, a well-known trial attorney, loving father, and devoted husband from Libertyville, Illinois. A month after turning 50-years-old, Michael began having difficulty recalling words and past events. After a trip to the emergency room, Michael was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor. Despite the tireless efforts of the skilled doctors and nurses at NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center, Michael passed away 15-months later in July of 2012.

“NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center is a very special place to my family,” said Mary Schostok, Michael’s wife. “While undergoing treatment, Michael witnessed the day-to-day financial struggles of others with brain cancer and he wanted to help. By establishing The Michael Matters Grant we are making that wish a reality. He would be so proud.”
