Area Hospitals Top The Charts, Magazine Says

U.S. News & World Report released its first survey of the best hospitals in the Chicago area, and north and northwest suburban hospitals ranked well.

Three area hospitals rank at or near the top of the 121 hospitals surveyed in the Chicago metropolitan area, according to U.S. News & World Report.

They include:

  • Tenth place--North Shore Skokie Hospital
  • Fifteenth place--North Shore Evanston Hospital
  • Fifteenth place--Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge

This is the first time the D.C.-based magazine has published rankings for the best hospitals within metro areas. Previously, it listed hospitals which ranked on a national scale for various specialties. But its editor said that for all but a small percentage of patients with very complicated health problems, it would be more meaningful to rank hospitals within metro areas.

“All of these hospitals provide first-rate care for the majority of patients, even those with serious conditions or who need demanding procedures,” Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow said in a press release. “The new Best Hospitals metro rankings can tell you which hospitals are worth considering for most medical problems if you live in or near a major metro area.”

Facilities that made the cut scored in the top 25 percent amongst neighboring institutions in at least one of 16 medical specialties.

“This localized ‘Best Hospitals’ study is significant because it highlights unique capabilities of the area’s leading hospitals,” Anthony A. Armada, FACHE, president of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital/Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital, said, also in a statement.

“It also reflects the continued commitment to service excellence, expertise and collaboration of Lutheran General’s physicians, house staff, nurses and other health care professionals, to continuously providing the best patient-centered care.”

Mark Neaman, president and Chief Executive Officer for NorthShore University HealthSystem,  also acknowledged his institutions' high ranking.

“This recognition reinforces the world-class care provided by NorthShore,” he said.  “We proudly offer a vast network of highly specialized experts that provide multi-specialty care and support to patients at all four of our hospitals."

More than 620 hospitals in or near cities were recognized across the country.
