Children's Pick: The "Who Was...?" Series by various authors

Summary: A biography series targeted toward readers between the ages of 8 and 11.
Liz says: "These have been very popular with kids that are interested in non-fiction reading and are perfect for school projects.  There are dozens of books in this series, each covering one interesting person in history whether they be politicians, cultural icons or artists. Just a few on the list include Eleanor Roosevelt, King Tut, Mozart, Harriet Tubman and Harry Houdini."

Teen/Young Adult Pick: "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton

Summary: Ponyboy can count on his brothers. And on his friends. But not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of a good time is beating up "greasers" like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect -- until the night someone takes things too far.
Liz says: "The Outsiders is one of my favorite young adult classics. It's a great coming-of-age story written in the 1960s by S.E. Hinton and was published when the author was only 16! The story takes place in the Midwest between two rival groups, "The Greasers" and the "Socs" and we follow the main character Ponyboy as things heat up to a dark and unexpected turning point between the two gangs and within The Greasers group itself. Fans of the movie Stand by Me tend to be lovers of this book...also, the 1983 movie adaptation with allstar cast of Rob LoweEmilio Estevez, Matt DillonTom CruisePatrick SwayzeRalph Macchio, and Diane Lane is a great one!"

Adult Pick: "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros

Summary
: The tale of Esperanza Cordero, a young Latina girl growing up in an impoverished Chicano and Puerto Rican neighborhood of Chicago.
Liz says: "Cisnero's fantastic (1985) debut is constructed in vignettes. Esperanza longs for her concept of an ideal home in an ideal neighborhood and is determined to find a better life elsewhere and to then return to help the people she has left behind."
