Now Playing: Movies at the Local Art House Theater

Some of us don't want to spend our day off watching Twilight. Some of us want to spend our day off reading English captions.

The North Shore has so many movie theaters playing Twilight and James Bond, you might forget that foreign films exist too. But the local art house theaters are open this weekend, and offering a selection of films that might not get noticed by the black Friday droves — and maybe that's a good thing. 

Wilmette Theatre

A Late Quartet: The story of four musicians in New York City, bound together by their passion for music and long years of working together. But when their patriarch is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the repercussions hit the group deeper than they could imagine. Starring: Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mark Ivanir and Catherine Keener. Directed by Yaron Zilberman.

Argo: Based on real events, this dramatic thriller chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans during the Iran hostage crisis. Starring: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman. Directed by Ben Affleck.

The Sessions: Based on the autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O'Brien, tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined, at age 38, to lose his virginity. Starring John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy. Directed by Ben Lewin.

Anna Karenina: Set in late-19th-century Russia high-society, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. Starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law. Directed by Joe Wright.

A Royal Affair: A Danish film about a young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician - and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever. 

The Other Son: A French film about two young men, one Israeli and one Palestinian, who discover they were accidentally switched at birth.

The Flat: An Israeli documentary about a filmmaker who while cleaning out the flat that belonged to his grandparents - both immigrants from Nazi Germany - uncovers clues pointing to a complicated and shocking story.

Hitchcock: A love story between influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and wife Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho in 1959. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson. Directed by Sacha Gervasi.

Life of Pi: A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery with another survivor, a fearsome Bengal tiger. Starring Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan and Adil Hussain. Directed by Ang Lee.

Silver Linings Playbook: After a stint in a mental institution, a former teacher moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when he meets a mysterious girl with problems of her own. Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro. Directed by David O. Russell.

Lincoln: As the Civil War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. Directed by Stephen Spielberg.
