Storm Hits Glenview Hard, Many Still Without Power

With downed trees, destroyed power lines and traffic light outages Public Works and ComEd are hard at work.

It’s been a wet few months in Glenview.

Last night’s intense thunderstorm—and tornado warning—left the village with power outages, downed trees and 47 calls to the , Village Communications Director Lynne Stiefel said this morning.

Emergency personnel from the police and fire departments reported f but no one was inside or injured.  At least six downed trees damaged ComEd power lines, Stiefel said.

This morning, a ComEd spokesperson told Patch that the number of  in its northern region was down to 88,000 from the initial 267,000 affected customers. Three ComEd crews are currently working in Glenview.

At one of the hardest-hit areas on Harlem Avenue near Glenview and Golf Roads, several downed trees and power lines kept public work teams busy following the storm. Around town, crews focused on clearing debris including trees and large limbs from roadways to stack them on parkways for later removal, officials said.

Two Glenview water pump stations and two sanitary lift stations reported outages and relied on generator power. Village Hall also lost power from the storm, officials reported.

“Currently, the Village has three full tree crews picking up branches along parkways, which are taken back to the Public Works facilities to be chipped,” Stiefel explained. “Three street sweepers are also out clearing debris from roadways, and a fourth will be added tomorrow.”

Officials are asking residents to pull vehicles off streets to allow crews better access. The Village has also arranged for two special Saturday garbage picks ups on June 25 and July 2 for tree branches and debris from the storm.

Residents are encouraged to cut branches into pieces no larger than 6 inches in diameter and five feet in length and bring them to the curb. For branches too large to break down, public works crews will be making rounds as needed.

officers will be stationed along Lake Avenue and Waukegan Road during rush hour traffic to direct drivers through intersections with traffic light outages, Stiefel said. As of this morning, that included Waukegan at Glenview Road and Waukegan at Lake Avenue.
