New Shermer Road Bridge Possible By End of Year

It's been a year since the bridge collapsed during a train derailment, killing a Glenview couple.

A new Union Pacific railroad bridge could be up over Shermer Road by the end of 2013, according to Union Pacific spokesperson, Mark Davis.

The construction time on the bridge was expedited after previous estimates of a 2014 construction because Illinois and Glenview worked with Union Pacific to assemble the necessary permits faster than usual.

"All the groups, between the railroads, the state and the communities, helped in getting permitting faster than normal," Davis said.

The Shermer Road bridge collapsed a year ago after a Union Pacific train derailment. The falling bridge crushed a vehicle carrying two Glenview residents driving under the bridge.

Union Pacific will likely have a contracter assigned to the construction in the next few weeks, then construction will likely last from July through November, Davis said.

A formal sketch of the new bridge is not available yet, according to Davis.

Patch previously reported that Shermer Road won't be repaired until 2014, once weather permits.
