Flooding Closes Roads, Causes Outages in Glenview

Glenview resident Dale Hurst, who is an observer for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, wrote in to say that he recorded 3.82 inches of rain as of 7 a.m. this morning from the overnight storms.
He also sent in photos of his flooded back yard, which you can see above.

Flooding in Glenview has closed roads and left more than 100 people without power Wednesday morning, the village reported. 

The village said in an email that 4 inches of rain had fallen between 4 and 11 a.m. This has caused road closures and more than 100 power outages. Sandbags are available at the Public Works Department for those areas in need. 

Below is the village's update in full, which lists road closures and what neighborhoods will be given sandbags.

Flash Flood Warning until 11:30 a.m. 

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for northeastern Illinois -- including the Glenview area -- until 11:30 a.m.

As of 10 a.m., the Village had received 4.0 inches of rain starting around 4 a.m.

For life-safety emergencies, dial 911. Glenview emergency crews are responding to 911 calls for emergency services.

For non-life safety requests, contact Village Hall at (847) 724-1700. A customer service representative will take your information, and Public Works crews will respond as soon as possible. Crews are monitoring street flooding and continually clearing storm sewer inlets, and are responding to other emergency service requests.

  • Public Works Service Center, 1333 Shermer Road
  •  Tanglewood Drive cul-de-sacc

Rainfall Information, as of 10 a.m.

  • Techny Basin, the major stormwater detention basin in Glenview located near Willow Road and Ravine Way, is approximately 25 percent full.  
  • The West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River is at approximately 626.2 feet above sea level (average is 618 feet), and has been holding at that level since 7 a.m. today.
  • Heavy rainfall is anticipated again later today from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. which may worsen conditions, so please limit travel if possible.
  • The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has not opened any of the three discharge gates/locks into Lake Michigan, located in Wilmette, Navy Pier, and the O'Brien lock because the lake still remains at a higher elevation than the river (2-foot differential in Wilmette and 6 foot differential in Chicago).

Roadway closure information

  • Roadways are being closed and re-opened as conditions warrant. Please exercise caution when driving, use slower speeds when possible, and do not drive through standing water. 
  • Current road closures include:

-- Dewes Street between Harlem and Washington

-- Dewes Street between Spruce and Elm

-- Ferndale and Hunter

-- Wilmette Avenue and Arbor Lane

-- West Lake Avenue and Shermer Road

-- Shermer Road and Old Willow Road

-- Shermer Road and Patriot Boulevard

-- Patriot Boulevard between Willow Road and West Lake Avenue

-- Waukegan Road north of Golf Road (under the viaduct)

Please note that this list may not reflect all road closures in effect, as roads will be closed and re-opened as conditions warrant.

Call Activity

As of 10 a.m., Glenview's Public Safety Dispatch Center reports that the Fire Department responded to 29 calls related to flooding and vehicle rescue and the Police Department responded to 33 calls regarding traffic hazards. Dispatchers received 626 calls total so far, with 328 coming between 7 and 8 a.m.

Call ComEd about power outages Some areas of the community are experiencing power outages. Customers should contact the utility in the event of a power outage:

As of 10 a.m., 142 residential customers reported power was out in Glenview and unincorporated Maine Township.  Customers at Glenview Road and Prairie Street are expected to regain power tonight.
