Glen Dominick's Becoming Jewel

In announcing its departure from the Chicago market, Safeway confirmed Glenview's Donick's will transition into a Jewel late this year.

In announcing its exit from the Chicago market around early 2014, Dominick's owner Safeway said the store at 1340 Patriot Blvd. was one of four purchased by Jewel's parent company, according to the E-Glenview newsletter.

A Safeway spokesman confirmed on Friday the Glenview store will not close and will continue operating as a grocery store. The store will probably operate as a Dominick's until late December, then be renamed and rebranded as a Jewel.

Dominick's has asked the new owner to consider interviewing and hiring the grocery's store current employees. Dominick's opened the 62,000-square-foot store in 2001 — one of the many retailers to build new stores when the former Glenview Naval Air Station was redeveloped as The Glen Shopping Center.

Safeway closed its other Dominick's store at 1020 Waukegan Road in downtown Glenview in 2007. Cleveland-based Heinen's Fine Foods is now constructing a 44,000-square-foot grocery store on the site, aiming for an April 2014 opening.

Jewel also operates two other stores in Glenview, at 2775 Pfingsten Road and 2502 Waukegan Road, and the Village has not been told of any plans to close either of them.
