Halloween Books For Kids and Adults at The Book Stall

Want to give yourself nightmares or just spend some time with your kids? The Book Stall in downtown Winnetka has plenty of books to get your ready for Halloween.

Sometimes the wait for costume parties and trick-or-treating can be unbearable. After all, October is 31 days long. But The Book Stall at 811 Elm St. in Winnetka offers a vast selection of Halloween themed children's books and horror literature for adults to get your blood boiling all month long.

"[Halloween] is the most popular holiday for selling books," said Robert McDonald, head of the children's department at The Book Stall. "Many Halloween books are not just Halloween stories. Sometimes people don't mind spending money for a book they know they're going to read more than once a year."

Among his favorite books for kids is Room on the Broom, a picture book about a friendly witch who gets in trouble after carrying too many critters on her flyig broom.

"It rhymes very well and it's just a great read aloud," McDonald said. "The language is very rhythmic and it's not a very spooky story."

The store recently stocked Harriet's Halloween Candyanother classic picture book about the dangers of eating too much candy and not sharing.

McDonald says it's a classic story that they've stocked for the first time in years.

A few other selections include Literally Disturbedfrightening poems for kids ages 8 and up; Click, Clack, Boo!the first Halloween themed book by the author of Click, Clack, Mooand Witch Switchfrom the Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo series.

For the parents who want to read some real horror, McDonald suggest NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son. McDonald says he stayed up late reading the book, and ended up having nightmares.

The book even has a subtle tie in to Doctor SleepStephen King's recent sequel to The Shining.
