Sweet Dreams Owner Retiring After 9 Years, Shop Closing Monday

The organic bakery and cafe shared the news with disappointed customers on Facebook Sunday.

After nine years of offering Glenview and the North Shore an entirely organic menu, Sweet Dreams Cafe and Bakery will be closing after Monday. According to Martha Sutton, Sweet's executive chef, the cafe's owner decided to retire.

"It's a ma and pop shop, and the ma would like to retire," Sutton said. "Nine years ago we had to explain organic. In the nine years that we've been here, people seek us out now, they seek out organic."

"We're pleased for the world and the people of Glenview, that people are eating healthy," she added.

Today will be the cafe's last day at 1107 Waukegan Rd., according to Sutton. However, she said that a new location might eventually open elsewhere around Chicago or possibly in the city.

The cafe grew substantially since it first opened as a small cafe and cake shop. An expanded kitchen, an extra room, last spring they even introduced organic beer and wine.

"We're sad because we believed in what we were doing, we really believed in our product," Sutton said. "One of the things we were so proud of, is that we wouldn't make it if we couldn't make it organic."

Although Sutton says finances were not a catalyst in the store's closing, she did point out the affect food prices had on running the business.

"When the Midwest has a hard winter, wheat prices go up, and when you factor in organic, the prices get astronomical. Wheat, butter, dairy, everything is affected," she said. "I think some people thought we were overpriced, which is unfortunate because we probably should have been charging more."
