What is a Shut Down Learner?

Monday's Mailbag features tips and advice from local child and family Psychologist, Michael Clatch.

What is a Shut Down Learner?

Do you have a shut down learner (SDL)? These learners typically experience frustration with school and embarrassment over their inability to make progress. Although some children seem to cope well with these challenges, they are often difficult to help, making slight progress and setting unachievable goals. If your child has skill weaknesses in reading, writing and spelling, acquires little gratification from school and is experiencing increased anger toward school, you may have a shut down learner. They will need extra support to foster academic growth and success.
