Take two week's ago for instance: After recently purchasing a ranch home in Libertyville, thinking we had a dry basement turned out to be a major wake-up call. On that fateful Sunday, I went downstairs to put in my weekend laundry, only to discover puddles of water with a steady stream of water flowing from a "void" in my foundation. Ever try reaching one of the big-name companies on a Sunday? Typically futile and that Sunday proved to be no different! I tried the "Big 3," you know who I mean and ended up with Bupkus, not Butkus, the legendary Bear's Linebacker probably would have torn his hair out.

Hoping I might get lucky and strike gold, I contacted and paged a local Libertyville company who was in a movie theater and attempted to quote me $250 an hour to have one of her Plumber's stop by-thanks but no thanks! That was not about to happen. My usual handy-guy was in the city heading to the Blackhawks game but referred Tarpay, saying he was dependable, if I could reach him.

Well, after my desparation call went in, Tarpay called me back about 20 minutes later and didn't hesitate to put me at ease with his upbeat, can-do attitude. After speaking to one local "reluctant warrior" Steve was a welcome breath of fresh air.

He called me from the road, arrived when he said he would and proceeded to pull out "every trick" in order to slow down the stream of water that would not stop flowing from my foundtion. Tarpay got rid of all the ice hanging from my roof, cleared the ice off of my deck, set up giant wooden planks to defuse the water from reaching my foundation by deflecting it from my house to our lawn and even provide our family with clean "Dog towels" he keeps for emergencies like many of us have when the weather suddenly morphs from frozen to melting and 44 degrees.

The guy was unstoppable and refused to give up and better yet, his prediction of when the water would slow, was right on the button!

But the best part was his sense of humor and refusal to allow himself or me, his customer to become discouraged. In fact, his attitude made our entire family realize that the flooding we were experiencing was curable and only temporary-and he was spot on!
