Northshore Photographer's Life Changing Epiphany Brings Powerful Meaning To Her Work

Wonderful Northshore Photographer prides herself on making client's memories longlasting & beyond special.

According to Photographer Romy Modlin, her life-changing epiphany occurred when her "beautiful son was born." "Something changed. I realized my love for artistic expression wasn't as much about what I was creating as much as it was about making memories." Romy goes on to say that she found herself completely focused on helping her client's to isolate their special memories to ensure that they last a lifetime. When Romy's daughter was born, her direction as an artist was solidified forever more.

Originally from Capetown, South Africa, Romy came to the US in 1998 after receiving a merit scholarship to pursue a post-graduate degree from Chicago's Art Institute. Romy's credentials include a degree in fine art photography from The University of Cape Town, where Romy also completed two documentary exhibitions on Jewish and Muslim women in Cape Town. Romy's Jewish roots lend themselves nicely to her sense of what families expectations are for their Mitzvahs on the Norshore. (or anywhere for that matter).

My family and I had the good fortune of experiencing Romy's passion for her art first hand when we hired Romy to photograph my daughter's Bat Mitzvah this past March. Romy took complete ownership of our Mitzvah goals while providing an uncanny knack for capturing the most poignant moments that we envisioned. In fact, Romy's use of both her skill-set in combination with her innate, intuitive sense behind the camera took our Bat Mitzvah celebration to new levels.

Leading into the early stages of our festive party for my daughter Lauren Rose, Romy really hit the mark with her pre-party portrait shots as family and friends arrived to pose with her. Than, as the party went into full swing, Romy moved like a cat, capturing so many spontaneous moments that in some ways, it was almost as if she'd rendered herself invisible and caught a plethora of highlights as the evening progressed. Romy never missed a beat and made the process fun. To this day, I've never witnessed a photographer who possessed a better sense of creative balance during a major celebratory event like Romy embodies.

Romy's ability to capture natural expressions without falling into the "canned pic" trap is unmatched, opening up the floodgates to creative, spontaneous results. Her experience as an artist, a photographer and most of all as a storyteller (her Mantra) rings true, while benefitting her clients.

Hosting a Bat Mitzvah is a tremendous journey and while it represents one of the most important milestones for both child and family, there is no avoiding some semblence of stress. In spite of the usual stress (some good) that comes with managing so many vendors while ensuring that family, friends and most of all the guest of honor are happy and her day is special, one of the best decisions I made was putting my trust in Romy Modlin.

Romy's gift is to transcend the moment, while exceeding a client's hopes,  making the process seamless and easy. When we received our (over 200) photos for just the party/celebration alone, we were stunned by the clarity and the quality was unmatched. Years of photographing everything from portraits, to corporate events to Mitzvahs and her many philanthropic, charitible ventures was evident and beneficial to my daughter, me and our family.
