Number of Same-Sex Households Rise In Northern Suburbs

Census releases information that shows they're up more than 40 percent in Illinois.

Even advocates for gay rights were surprised that 2010 Census figures released Thursday indicated a large jump in the number of same-sex households.

In Illinois, the number of such households increased more than 40 percent over the 2000 census, according to the Chicago Tribune.  It was even higher in the 30 other states where the U.S. Census Bureau previously released information: 49 percent.

Amy Skalinder of Skokie told the Tribune she checked the box on her Census form indicating she lived in a same-sex partnership with Jennifer Toner. She said the higher numbers mean an increase in society's acceptance of same-sex relationships.

Here's the breakdown of same-sex households in local suburbs. The numbers in towns across Chicagoland can be found in an interactive map.
