He
held only one elective office in his career (Governor of Illinois, 1948-1952),
but Adlai Stevenson set the standard for political speechmaking in his two
unsuccessful Presidential campaigns. Adored by his followers and disparaged by
his opponents, the label "egghead" stuck with him throughout both
campaigns. His refusal to repeat speeches while campaigning resulted in a
literary storehouse of one-liners, memorable phrases, and profound statements
on democracy. Drawing from speeches, period photographs and other materials,
Joe Bean’s presentation will showcase Stevenson's humor, his dedication to
world peace, and his concern for education, patriotism and participatory
democracy. Registration is $9 member; $12 non-member.
