League of Women Voters History Month Luncheon March 5, 2011

Dr. Rachel Bronson, Vice President of Programs and Studies at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, will speak about “Women’s Progress in Global Leadership” at the League of Women Voters Women’s History Month Luncheon on Saturday, March 5, 2011.  Sponsored by the Leagues of Women Voters of Deerfield, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Lake Forest/Lake Bluff, Park Ridge, Wilmette and Winnetka/Northfield/Kenilworth, the luncheon commemorates Women’s History Month by acknowledging the contribution and inspiration of female history makers.

 The 18th Annual Luncheon at The Glen Club, 2901 West Lake Ave. in Glenview, will begin with an 11:45 am reception, followed by lunch at 12:15 pm and Dr. Rachel Bronson 1:00 pm.  Currently, Dr. Bronson oversees more than 150 yearly programs as well as The Council on Global Affair’s increasing intellectual capital.   Previously, she was Senior Fellow and Director, Middle East Studies, at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.  Dr. Bronson received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania: M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University.

 Dr Bronson’s book, Thicker than Oil: America’s Uneasy Partnership with Saudi Arabia (Oxford Press, 2006), has been translated into Japanese and published in paperback.  Her writings have appeared in publications such as Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune.  Dr. Bronson has commented widely on foreign affairs in outlets such as National Public Radio, CNN, The Lehrer News Hour, The Charlie Rose Show and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  She has served as a consultant to NBC News and the Center of Naval Analyses.  She has testified before the Congressional Anti-Terrorist Finance Task Force, Congress’ Joint Economic Committee and the 9/11 Commission.

 Donations will be collected for the YWCA Evanston North Shore Domestic Violence Program and the YWCA Lake County Scholl Age After School Program.  In addition to monetary donations, the YWCA Evanston needs Polaroid 600 film, large and x-large disposable diapers, new socks and underwear for women and children, gift cards to stores (Jewel, Dominick’s, Target).  Monetary donations to the YWCA Lake County will go towards purchasing children’s board games.
