Glenview Launches Biking Initiative

A new community-wide initiative called Bike Glenview, which encourages biking as a preferred mode of transportation around town, will launch April 13.

A new community-wide initiative called Bike Glenview, which encourages biking as a preferred mode of transportation around town, will launch April 13.

The initiative is a cooperative effort between the Village of Glenview, the Village’s Natural Resources Commission, Glenview Park District, Glenview Public Library and the Glenview Chamber of Commerce.  The ongoing campaign promotes biking as a healthy, cost-effective and low-polluting way to travel around the community.

“Bike riding has been an American tradition since the very beginnings of our country," M. David Johnson, president of the Glenview Public Library Board of Trustees said in a release. "Not only does riding a bike save our environment from the chemicals and particulates which would be released into the atmosphere if we drove a car instead; it also is good for our hearts, our lungs, and our general muscle tone. It’s a win-win!  The next time you come to the Library to pick up or drop off a book or a video, why not ride your bike?”

Among Bike Glenview initiatives:

  • Free bike route maps will be available for residents to pick up at Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave.; Glenview Village Hall, 1225 Waukegan Road; and at the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road.
    • The map shows existing bike routes and paths; sidewalks along major arterials that can be used by bicyclists; “fun” routes through neighborhoods that can get you to twenty Glenview hubs and attractions in downtown Glenview, The Glen, Gallery Park, The Grove, along with Glenview’s most interesting and beautiful natural areas.
  • A new website, bikeglenview.com, provides more information on bike safety tips, upcoming events and an interactive Google map that can be accessed via smartphones to provide bikers with their current location while out on a path.
  • Bike map signage will be posted at key bike route locations around town to help traveling bikers.

To kick off the initiative, there are a number of bike-related special events scheduled to get bicyclists out and pedaling around town:
