6 Glenbrook South Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

The high school hosted a fall signing day to recognize Titan athletes who will play at universities around the country.

Six Glenbrook South athletes signed letters of intent to play Division 1 sports with universities across the country this Wednesday.

Athletic director Steve Rockrohr said that it's the greatest number of students he can remember who have gotten athletic scholarships in his 12 years at GBS.

"It's a great custom, and I thank both our athletic department and the effort those kids put into it, as well as their parents," Rockrohr said.

Athletes signing letters of intent include soccer player Konstantin Brkovic, who is headed to DePaul University; baseball player Conor McCarthy, who is going to Villanova University; volleyball player Izabella Rapacz, who will attend Temple University; tennis player Caroline Ryba, who signed with the University of Minnesota; lacrosse player Kelly Ward, who will attend Longwood University, and baseball player Mario Tursi, who is on his way to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

"That was kind of my dream since I was a little kid, to play college baseball at a D1 university," said McCarthy, who pitched one of his best games ever this summer, when he threw a complete game to win a Connie Mack league state championship.

McCarthy has played for the Titans for the last three years, but he's been playing with fellow scholarship winner Tursi even longer.

"We played together since we were little kids," McCarthy said. "That was pretty awesome to sign our letters of intent together on the same day."
