Laura Fine: A FINE Addition to the State of Illinois

Learn more about Glenview resident, Laura Fine, who's running for Illinois State Representative

Laura fine says she spends about 40 hours per week these days knocking on doors of people who aren’t expecting her. “What’s she selling?” you might ask. The answer: herself.

Fine, a Glenview mother of two teen-age boys and a Political Science instructor at Northeastern Illinois University is running for Illinois State Representative in the 17th district, the seat that is currently available because democrat Daniel Biss is running for Illinois State Senate. Fine says what motivated her to get into politics, was the way local lawmakers rallied for her and her husband a few years back when they had some serious issues with an insurance company.

“Part of the job of a community leader is constituent services,” says Fine, who in addition to her teaching job is the clerk in Northfield township, “and when Michael and I needed help, our government officials were right there. They were fully ready to take our case to the state.”

Fine says if elected, the issues she’s going to tackle include education and taxes.

“People in our area cannot afford more tax increases,” she says, “We have to figure out how to keep our system solvent without any undue stress to the taxpayer.”

She says that being a professor, she sees so many students who have full time jobs, and who are in school, earning their degree not only to better themselves, but because business owners want educated employees as well, and that the cost of higher education has really gotten out of control.

“We need fiscal/budget accountability. The state is a mess, and if we go through the budget carefully, I know there are ways to cut spending,” she says.

Fine grew up in this area and says she came back here to raise her kids because she loves it so much. She’s active in the school district, she’s heavily involved with the Northfield Food Pantry, and she’s on the board of directors of Links North Shore Youth Health Service.

When I asked her if she ever got tired of knocking on doors, campaigning, Fine replied, “There are lots of people who won’t open their doors, but the ones who do share their stories and open their hearts to me, and it makes me realize how amazing this district is.”

Of course, I asked her for specifics. Fine said she had a conversation with a Holocaust survivor that brought her to tears because it was so touching and that the woman was just amazing. She also said she had a great conversation about what our town needs with a guy wearing only his underwear.

I want to personally come out and say that I have full faith in Laura Fine’s abilities as Illinois State Representative for our district. I met the Fine’s about three years ago, and have been running into them around town ever since. Laura strikes me as very dedicated, honest, ethical and extremely smart. After all, look at all the things she’s involved in that are selfless, offer no monetary compensation, and take tons of time.

I think she’s in this for the right reasons, and truly wants to make a difference. I would trust Laura to represent my district as Representative. She’s motivated, well spoken, kind, courageous, smart and a go-getter.

I’m actually a republican, Laura possibly being the only democrat I will vote for in this election. That said, I hope she wins, because I’m not looking at the party, I’m looking at the person. And she will do great, if elected.

Good luck Laura! I wish you all the best!!
