MONEY IN POLITICS: WHY IT MATTERS

Since the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, the amount of money spent in campaigns has risen dramatically. In 2012, more than $3.5 billion was spent across the country on Congressional races alone, with Illinois' 10th Congressional District race ranking among the most expensive at over $7 million. All indications are that 2014's race for the 10th District will far outstrip 2012 in spending.

Campaign finance reform is a nonpartisan issue with widespread backing.  The League of Women Voters -Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Area is partnering with the Washington, DC-based Committee for Economic Development in hosting "Money in Politics: Why It Matters" onThursday, March 27, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Rd. Lake Forest. The panel comprises both local and national experts who will discuss how corrosive pay-to-play politics is to our democracy. Business and civic leaders believe major reforms are needed.
