Anti-Bullying Seminar Filling Up to Hear Son of Walter Payton

Jarrett Payton, son of Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, and Camille Paddock, a 15-year-old who was bullied almost to the point of ending her life, will appear together at Bullied No More at Maine West High School, 1755 S Wolf Rd, Des Plaines, Wednesday, March 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. The free anti-bullying event is presented by MaineStay Youth & Family Services, a division of Maine Township.

"We all have a role to play in ending bullying and are proud to bring this program to all Maine Township citizens," said Maine Township Supervisor Carol A. Teschky. "Many thanks to our staff at MaineStay for addressing one of the pressing human needs in our community."

Jarrett will discuss the dynamics of bullying and encourage students to find common ground with classmates. He will highlight the role of bystanders and challenge young people to speak out when they see bullying occur. All forms of bullying will be addressed, including cyber bullying. Jarrett will also share his own experiences with bullying during high school.

Camille, a 15-year-old who was bullied to the point of almost ending her life, will share her personal story of triumph over bullying. Ruthlessly bullied beginning at the age of nine, she eventually withdrew from life and wanted to die to escape the pain. However, instead of remaining a victim, Cam took a stand and started her own anti-bullying organization and has spread her message of hope to thousands. Many students have told her they decided not to kill themselves after hearing her inspiring story.

Ideal for all students, whether targets of bullying, perpetrators, or bystanders, the program will also benefit parents and school personnel.  More than 450 people have already registered for the event.
