Maine Township Anti-Bullying Seminar Deemed Highly Successful

Bullied No More Seminar a Rousing Success

With over 450 parents, teens, educators, counselors and others in attendance and the television cameras rolling Jarrett Payton, son of Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, and Camille Paddock, a 15-year-old who was bullied almost to the point of ending her life, appeared with Maine Township Supervisor Carol A. Teschky at Bullied No More at Maine West High School in Des Plaines on March 12. The free anti-bullying event was presented by MaineStay Youth & Family Services, a division of Maine Township.

"We all have a role to play in ending bullying and are proud to bring this program to all Maine Township citizens," Maine Township Supervisor Teschky told the audience of about 450. "Many thanks to our staff at MaineStay for addressing one of the pressing human needs in our community."

Jarrett discussed the dynamics of bullying and encouraged students to find common ground with classmates. He highlighted the role of bystanders and challenge young people to speak out when they see bullying occur. All forms of bullying were addressed, including cyber bullying. Jarrett also shared his own experiences with bullying during high school.

Camille, a 15-year-old who was bullied to the point of almost ending her life, shared her personal story of triumph over bullying. Ruthlessly bullied beginning at the age of nine, she eventually withdrew from life and wanted to die to escape the pain. However, instead of remaining a victim, Cam took a stand and started her own anti-bullying organization and has spread her message of hope to thousands. Many students have told her they decided not to kill themselves after hearing her inspiring story.
