Upcoming Events at the North Suburban YMCA

YogaFest is this Saturday. Save the date for an exciting day of yoga with your favorite Y instructors, special guest teachers and mind-body vendors. YogaFest will take place at the Sheraton Hotel Northbrook on Saturday, December 7 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Admission is $25. Y Member Registration for Winter is now open! Visit www.nsymca.org to view the Winter Program Guide, full of exciting new classes and activities coming up in 2014. Member registration starts on December 3, non-member registration on December 14. Sign up before December 28 to enjoy early registration discounts! Winter classes run from January 6 to March 23.

NCDAA, a division of the NSYMCA, joins with the Family Action Network to present the new Parent University Speakers’ Series.  Acclaimed author Andrew Solomon will speak on “Love, No Matter What: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity” on Wednesday, December 4, 7:00pm, at New Trier High School, 385 Winnetka Road in Winnetka. Safe Rides Informational Parent Meeting. Parents of Glenbrook North students are invited to learn about the Safe Rides program proposed for GBN, at a meeting at the Northbrook Covenant Church on December 11 at 7:00pm. Safe Rides is a confidential program dedicated to ensuring that teens always have access to a safe ride home. The meeting will be facilitated by NCDAA Coordinator Sari Glazebrook, Safe Rides Committee Chair for New Trier Jeff Brooks, and GBN student and Safe Rides proponent Toby Klein. The Y’s Community Gallery features a photography show and sale by local artist Michael Greenberg, on display throughout December. Michael’s beautiful, reasonably priced landscape photographs are available framed or unframed, with sale proceeds benefiting the YMCA. Great holiday gift idea!

“Days Off” Camps. When school’s out, there’s extra fun at the Y! School break camps offer swimming, field trips, sports, art, and more, from 7:30am to 6:00pm. Kids Ride to the Y. Simplify your life – let the Y Bus pick up your kids after school and bring them to their Y classes! Transportation is available for a small fee from elementary and middle schools in Northbrook and Glenview. Contact Shannon Cartier at scartier@nsymca.org for more information.

Basketball/Volleyball Private Lessons. Hoping to jumpstart a new sport, or focus on perfecting your skills? The Y offers private basketball and volleyball lessons for all ages to deliver customized coaching in a comfortable setting. Contact Carol Sassorossi, csassorossi@nsymca.org,  for more information.

Exercise Connection, a leader in physical fitness training for individuals with special needs, now offers a fitness course for adults with autism spectrum disorders at the North Suburban Y. Classes focus on core skills including body image, posture, motor coordination, muscular fitness and cardiovascular fitness.  Northbrook resident and Director in Training for the Exercise Connection, Laura Fine will lead the class. Class size is limited and one-on-one aide support is available. The Y is proud to offer professional massage services from Align Wellness Center. Appointments are available for 25 minute or 55 minute sessions in our comfortable Health Center, adjacent to our adult locker rooms. Sign up for appointments at the Y front desk. Do you have a child in half-day kindergarten? Enrich their experience with the Y’s Kindergarten Club extension program! Kindergarten Club creates a fun, full-day experience to support your child’s social and academic development. Afternoon sessions are available, including transportation to/from public schools in Northbrook  as well as St. Norbert’s. Hot lunches, snacks, and even swim lessons are all included! Also, check out Y-Time, the NSYMCA’s afterschool program for grades K-5. Limited openings available in each program. Parents, please note: non-member guests under the age of 18 must have a signed waiver on file to use YMCA facilities. Please stop by the front desk for more information. Also, unattended children under age 10 are not permitted in the building.
