Obituary: Gloria Shimkovitz, 68, "Experienced Life to the Fullest"

Services will be held Friday at noon.

Gloria Linda Shimkovitz of Glenview, IL and Brooklyn, NY, died on Tuesday, October 22 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn in 1945, Gloria proudly identified herself as a New Yorker all her life. She left New York to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison, sight unseen, on scholarship and was a Badger fan through and through. Mrs. Shimkovitz experienced life to the fullest as a gourmet, traveler, friend and mother. She was celebrated among friends and family for her fabulous cooking and legendary baking abilities. Accompanied by her husband of 42 years, Howard Shimkovitz, she visited Europe several times, toured North America extensively via automobile and even traveled to West Africa. She loved her work, first as a medical technician and later as a staff accountant. She had also enjoyed decades of friendship with neighbors she met in Glenview's Newcomers Club in 1975 as well as members of Gourmet Group, Lunch Bunch, Wilmette PTA and several Book Clubs. An avid reader, Gloria also deeply enjoyed art, science, cultural and historical museums and had a deep affection for America's National Parks. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in your favorite charities. Survived by her husband; two daughters, Stacy Shimkovitz Phillips and Melissa Shimkovitz; a son, Brian Shimkovitz; a son-in-law, Kevin Phillips; and two grandchildren born this past September 27th, Ethan Tyler and Norah Elizabeth Phillips. Service Friday 12:00 Noon, at The Weinstein Funeral Home 111 Skokie Blvd Wilmette, Il 60091. Interment Private
