Moving For A Cause: Field's Fun Run Supports Fitness and Service

Students from Field Middle School in Northbrook walked and ran for several good causes last week.

On Thursday, May 22, the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students participated in the annual 5K Fun Run/Walkathon. All of the students had the opportunity to raise money by asking family and friends to sponsor them and donate for every lap they walked or ran around the school’s field.

The sixth grade planned and organized this event as part of their service learning initiative. Proceeds from the day will go to several charities that the sixth graders brainstormed, researched, and later voted on. This year, the students decided the money should go to three charities including: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the district’s Education Foundation to support the ACT NOW Campaign, and the Lacey Horwitch RTH Research Fund.

Although this is an event that happens every year, it was the first time that the sixth grade planned the event not only for their grade, but for everyone in the school to be involved.

“This year was the 12th annual 5K, but it was made even better by the fact that this sixth grade sponsored event was open for the whole school community,” said Field’s Principal Erin Murphy.

Students from all three grade levels enjoyed participating in the 5K, along with also eating a picnic lunch and dancing and listening to a live DJ.

Eighth grader Dani Keller said, “It’s a really fun experience,” while her classmate Jina Kim remarked, “The food is great and the fellowship is awesome.”

However, the students were not the only ones pleased with this year’s festivities.

Murphy represented the staff and administration when she said, “The event was really exciting for everyone, and our charitable organizations will benefit.”

With sunshine and beautiful weather throughout the day, the Fun Run/Walkathon served as a perfect celebration of service, fitness, and the beginning of summer.

A special thanks goes out to DJ Akib from Personalities Inc. for donating his services for the day.
