3 Killed in Car Crash With Skokie Garbage Truck

A garbage truck struck a passenger car at Harrison Street and Harlem Avenue Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Update, 10:20 a.m. Wednesday:

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said the victims of yesterday's car crash had not been identified. A representative confirmed that three people were killed, but said she could not provide their genders or ages.

Three people were killed after a village of Skokie garbage truck struck a passenger car at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in Glenview, according to the village of Skokie

Police are not releasing the names of the victims until families have been notified, according to Glenview Police Cmdr. Dave Sostak.

The garbage truck driver was on the way to the transfer station in Glenview when the truck struck a passenger car at Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street, officials said.

"The Village refuse truck had complete right of way and entered the intersection, at which time a passenger vehicle violated the two-way stop sign control and entered the intersection," the village of Skokie said in a press release.

Both vehicles caught fire and had to be extinguished by Glenview firefighters. The driver of the truck was not injured, according to the village of Skokie.

"The individual has been employed by the Village of Skokie for 19 years and has an excellent performance record," Skokie officials said in the release. "Required post-incident protocols are being followed."

No charges had been released as of press time. 

One witness attempted who tried to help people involved in the crash was reportedly uninjured but was transported to the hospital for evaluation, according to Glenview Police Cmdr. Dave Sostak.   

In addition to Glenview police and firefighters, members of the Major Crash Assistance Team also responded to the accident. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by 5 p.m. Thursday. The passenger vehicle was taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, while the truck was transported to a local tow company, according to Sostak. Both vehicles will undergo further investigation.

"The Village of Skokie expresses deep condolences to the victims' families and concern for all of those involved in this tragic incident," Skokie officials said in the release.

Original story, 4:00 p.m. Tuesday:

At least one person was killed after a garbage truck struck a passenger car at Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to Glenview Police Cmdr. Dave Sostak.

Sostak said police are not releasing the names of individuals involved until they have notified families.

The garbage truck was heading north on Harlem when it hit the passenger car, which was traveling east on Harrison, according to Sostak. Both vehicles caught fire and had to be extinguished by Glenview firefighters. The driver of the truck was not injured, although multiple passengers of the vehicle may have been killed, according to Sostak.
