Court Update: Alleged Kidnapper, Carjacker Seeks Reduced Bond

Crystal Perez's attorney has requested medical records in an effort to show improper care at Cook County Jail.

While attorney awaits medical records, the 19-year-old Glenview woman charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated vehicular hijacking remains in Cook County jail, according to her lawyer John Romano.

Unable to raise $30,000 cash for release on a $300,000 bond, she is powerless to receive proper care for her injured shoulder, Romano told Patch after a status hearing  June 1 in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Both charges against Perez are consideredand carry a prison sentence between six and 30 years, according to Cook County State’s Attorney spokesman Andy Conklin.

Perez and a second assailant, Christopher Walsh, 20, of Chicago, allegedly lured a 22-year-old Glenview man to Perez’s home and abducted him at knife point. After the victim was released in Evanston March 30, Walsh was killed in a high speed chase using the victim’s car, according to Glenview police records.

Perez’s shoulder was injured in the same crash and she was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, according to Romano. Romano has subpoenaed records from the hospital to show Judge Garritt Howard that Perez is not receiving proper care in the Cermak Hospital unit of Cook County Jail.

“Nothing good is happening there,” Romano said. “They’re just giving her pain killers. That’s it. She has torn muscles in her shoulder.” Romano hopes he can persuade Howard to lower the bond Perez may seek treatment outside of jail.

Judge Howard said Perez should be given appropriate treatment at Cermak but he could not order it.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Ed McCarthy gave Romano several documents but no medical records.

“They’re probably cell phone records,” Romano said of the paperwork.

Perez returns to court at 9:30 a.m. June 21 at the Skokie branch of Cook County Criminal Court.
