Court Update: SWANCC $900,000 Embezzlement Case Continues

Beal's lawyer reviews material from SWANCC, State's Attorney.

The attorney for former the executive director of the accused of embezzling more than $900,000 from his former employer is continuing to study evidence complied by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

, the lawyer for , the former executive director of SWANCC facing a potential 30-year prison sentence, told Judge Timothy Chambers the evidence was massive last Wednesday in the Circuit Court of Cook County.

“I’m in the process of preparing a response to a subpoena of SWANCC,” Breen said.

Beal, who headed SWANCC until he was dismissed on suspicion of theft, was indicted by the Cook County Grand Jury on two charges each of theft of government property, official misconduct and forgery. These Class X felonies carry a prison sentence of six to 30 years, according to Cook County State’s Attorney spokesperson Andy Conklin. 

Beal was charged March 10 with stealing more than $900,000 in funds from SWANCC after a five month joint investigation involving the and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Public Corruption Unit.

Beal allegedly filed false expense reports, claiming to register for prestigious graduate and management classes he never attended, according to a news release from Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

Breen was given two boxes and thousands of documents in June and has been studying them since. Additional information has been provided by SWANCC. “We’re reviewing the audit of SWANCC,” he said.

Beal returns to court at 9:30 a.m. October 11 in the Skokie branch of Cook County Criminal Court.
