Yes, it's a stereotype. Everyone from "The Simpsons" to any late-night comic worth his cholesterol has poked fun at cops eating donuts.

You have to hand it to for being good-natured enough to send a copper up on the roof of Glenview's Dunkin' Donut shop, for today’s 10th annual "Cop On Top" event. And it's all to collect money for charity!

Attorney General Lisa Madigan will also join Glenview PD and take to the roof to demonstrate her support, according to a press release. Police officers across the state are schedule to man roofs at more than 300 Dunkin' Donuts locations today.

Why donuts? Why not Danish, apple fritters or kolaczki? Would the nickname "cupcake" be a bad thing?

Those are good question to put to the guys or women in police blues standing on the roof. They'll be at  1750 Milwaukee Ave.

The money collected at Cop On Top day, along with funds raised from the upcoming Illinois Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefits the Illinois Special Olympics, Officer John Good told Patch.

Last year, law enforcement officers raised $215,000 statewide for the cause and hope to top that goal this year.

Everyone who visits the Cop on Top Rooftop Stakeout and makes a donation to the Torch Run will receive a free donut. People who donate at least $10 will also receive a Law Enforcement Torch Run Travel Mug and coupon for free coffee. And, in support of the cause, Dunkin' Donuts will donate $10,000 to the Torch Run fund.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised nearly $25 million over 26 years for Special Olympics athletes in Illinois and Glenview PD are scheduled to participate in the run June 1.

If you've got more questions (How many calories in a marble frosted donut? Does strawberry frosting count as a vegetable? Do these donuts make me look fat?), e-mail Officer John Good at jgood@glenview.il.us, Michele Henson with Special Olympics Illinois at mhenson@soill.org, or Carrie Reckert with Dunkin' Donuts at reckertcomm@yahoo.com.
