Following Tuesday's car crash into the front entry of a Glenview Post Office, initial damage has been assessed at $35,000, Sean Hargadon of the U.S. Postal Service said this morning.
"There was no structural damage reported to the building," he said. "However, there was cosmetic damage to one of the pillars at the entrance."

Retail operations will remain open and a patrons should enter using a side door during business hours. A timetable has not been established for the repairs and Hargadon told Patch he's not certain when the repairs will begin.

Around 8:40 a.m. this morning, an 84-year-old woman crashed her car into the main entry of the police said this afternoon.
The elderly woman was driving a 2011 Toyota Avalon north through the parking lot at 1400 Patriot Boulevard, police reports said. According to one witness, the car appeared to accelerate and then drove over a curb and a portion of sidewalk before hitting the building.
Police and firefighters were on the scene shortly after and the woman was transported by fire truck to for treatment and further evaluation, Sgt. David Sostak told Patch.
There were no passengers in the victim’s vehicle and no one at the post office or in the parking lot was injured, police said.
Due to the damage from impact, the main entry to the post office was closed. The Village of Glenview Building and Zoning Department was notified and inspectors went out to the site as a courtesy, said Village Communications Director Lynne Stiefel.
Because the building is owned by the U.S. Postal Service, Glenview does not have jurisdiction, Stiefel explained.
“Glenview’s inspectors deemed the damage appeared to be confined to the column that forms the covered entryway, and that the column’s brick surround was damaged but not the column itself,” she told Patch via e-mail this afternoon. “They suggested the damage area be fenced off in some way as a safety precaution.”
Details regarding a repair timetable and associated repair costs is not yet available from the U.S. Postal Service. Stay tuned to Glenview Patch for updates.
