Renovation Project Leads to Saranac Lane Garage Fire

According to fire officials, old carpets, sawdust and solvent were to blame for the Friday night fire.

A garage fire at 2456 Saranac Lane on Friday evening ended with around $5000 worth of damage, Glenview Police Chief Wayne Globerger told Patch today.

No one was in the home when the fire started in the garage around 7 p.m., according to officials. Flames could be scene from the garage’s roof, once witness said.

The homeowners had recently stripped and sanded the floors inside the main home and had stacked the old carpet in their garage, Globerger explained.

Globerger said the fire was most likely caused by sawdust on the carpets ignited with some sort of solvent solution in the garage.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the garage, but due to proximity, there was moderate smoke damage in the home, the fire chief added. Two fire engines and an ambulance were on the scene but there were no injuries.
