Glenview Kitchen Blaze Closes Shermer Road, Sends Man to Burn Unit

The fire started yesterday just before 3 p.m.

A kitchen fire in Glenview yesterday afternoon sent one man to the hospital with severe burns and shut down traffic on Shermer road for more than two hours, fire officials reported this morning.

According to the fire report, the blaze started shortly before 3 p.m. when food on the stove was left unattended. The Glenview Fire Department arrived to the home—1235 Shermer Road—at 2:55 p.m.

When crews entered the home they found an active fire in the kitchen, traveling throughout the cabinetry, through soffits and up through the walls leading to the second floor. Two attack handlines were used to bring the fire under control around 3:30 p.m., officials said.

“Glenview fire fighters arrived quickly and opened the walls to find hidden fires before the fire spread,” one witness told Patch.

The called in support from Northfield, Niles and Morton Grove departments, with 28 firefighters and four chiefs on the scene. Multiple fire engines, trucks and ambulences flooded the 1200 block of Shermer Road and the home’s resident, a 42-year-old man, was taken to for burn treatment. Because of the severity of burns, he was later transferred to the Loyola Burn Center in Maywood.

Crews remained on the scene until around 5:15 p.m. conducting overhaul and venting of the home, the fire report said. In total, the fire department has estimated damage around $75,000.
