Glenview Police: Bus Driver Reports Stranger Danger Incident

An elementary school student was approached by a stranger Tuesday morning—police are investigating the incident.

A District 31 bus driver picking up students in the 1700 block of Colfax Avenue Tuesday morning reportedly witnessed a middle-age male attempt to pick up an elementary school student, according to an alert from Glenview Police.

As the driver approached where the child and man were standing— at intersection of Colfax Avenue and Nordica Avenue—"the student ran towards the bus and boarded it." The next day the student told the driver that the man had offered him a ride to school.

Police are investigating the incident and, at this time, there is no sketch of the suspect. The man has been described as:

  • His vehicle was described as a black newer model Nissan Altima or Sentra with a partial license plate of 5262.

In response to the alleged harassment, District 31 released a community alert Thursday afternoon with the following tips:

  • If approached by a stranger, the child should walk in the opposite direction, or toward other people who might be able to provide protection. If the incident occurs in the child's neighborhood, but away from home, the child should go to the nearest trusted neighbors home for protection.
  • If other people are in the vicinity the child should yell loudly and clearly, "LEAVE ME ALONE. I AM CALLING THE POLICE!"
  • If the child has access to a telephone they should immediately dial 9-1-1 and explain what happened to the 9-1-1 operator.
  • If a telephone is not available the child should, as soon as possible, tell a responsible adult about the incident and ask the adult to call 9-1-1.
  • If possible, write down the license plate number of the vehicle the stranger was driving.

Please contact the police department at 847-729-5000 if you have any information on the incident.
